Our Calling:
15th June 2009Dear Friends and Supporters, Please allow me to share with you some sad news about Dirk van Zuylen. Sandra wrote “It is with tears of sadness and an aching heart that I am writing to let you know that my beloved Dirk died on June 6, the eve of our 40th anniversary. Minutes before he passed away, he gave me a beautiful ruby ring to mark our 40 years. He was surrounded by family at home as he peacefully slipped away”. She went on to include details of the funeral arrangements. This took place at St James’ church in Didsbury, Manchester on Friday June 12th.
In Dutch tradition, many processed behind Dirk’s coffin to the church. The service was a mixture of lamenting a much loved man and celebrating Dirk’s gifts, qualities and unique contribution. Beautiful flowers, beautiful music (with a powerful solo from daughter Mandy) and personal tributes including from son Steven, allowed tears to mingle with gratitude.
We are grateful to the Lord for Dirk’s sacrificial service and leadership of The Navigators UK. Dirk saw an early priority as strengthening the Student Leadership enabling the appointment of a new Team. Keen to emphasise prayerful dependence on God, under his leadership the prayer calendar “Reach” was launched. A man whose self knowledge and humility enabled him to harness the skills of others, he commissioned work on a Biblical Foundations Course for Representatives and also a new finance strategy. Dirk communicated great value to women, many of whom were thereby empowered to make their contribution. Resolute and courageous, he had a tender touch and mischievous humour that connected with many different people. He was a Dutchman with a lifelong passion for growing things and people. Sandra’s desire is for donations in memory of Dirk, go to The British Kidney Patient Association* Also, as a living memorial, a tree will be planted in his honour at Red Hill Christian Centre, a place he loved and used for many UK Leadership meetings. Missed by all, please especially uphold Sandra, Mandy, Mark, Steven and their families in your prayers at this time. Because Dirk invested deeply in people, he leaves a rich legacy behind. He was very pleased to learn that Pete Dowse was appointed as next Country Leader at the Succession Conference in May having recruited him to the Navigators and having worked closely with him in Sheffield for some years. Pete will take up his new post on September 1st, and until then the Executive Team of Ted Pilling, Thompy Wright and I will continue with our role. Encouraging progress has been made on a number of points highlighted in my January letter including commissioning a new work amongst our graduates. Further details will be available on our NEW website to be launched in September! With gratitude for your partnership in the gospel,
