There's never been a reading Bible quite like The Message.
Since Eugene Peterson's unique rendition of The New Testament
appeared in 1993, millions of people have discovered the penetratingly
powerful message of the Bible - as if reading it for the very
first time.
Eugene Peterson's history with The Navigators dates back to his
childhood when he memorized Scripture using The Navigators Topical
Memory System. His work on The Message grew out of the
close bond he developed with people during his years as a pastor.
"For 40 years, I pastored new converts who didn't know Abraham
from Moses," Eugene says. "I've spent my life trying to get the
Bible into their language. That's what I'm doing with The Message."
"While teaching a class on Galatians, I realized that the adults
in my class weren't feeling the vitality and directness that I
sensed as I read and studied the New Testament in its original
Greek. The early readers of The New Testament were captured and
engaged by these writings, and I wanted my congregation to be
impacted in the same way. I hoped to bring the New Testament to
life for two different types of people: those who hadn't read
the Bible because it seemed too distant and irrelevant, and those
who had read the Bible so much that it had become "old hat."
Those early readers of Eugene's work understood what was written
and they were dramatically transformed by what they read and changed
the course of history forever. That power, forcefulness, and directness
of the language is what Eugene Peterson recaptures in The Message.
"The Message Bible--I read it every day! It's
fresh, challenging, at times shocking. It makes you want to jump
up to your feet and take action."
